Jesus is not embarrassed, disgusted or ashamed of our messy lives. He sympathizes with the magnitude of sin we fall into. In fact, He embraces and meets us right at that point we are in our messy, chaotic and confusing lives. He is never ashamed of us. He knows about it before we can even understand the situation we are in. He wants to come right at the table to meet and offer us something better, bigger and deeper than we can ever imagine for ourselves. He wants to meet us in our homes, in our marriages, in our depths of despair. It is the devil’s plan to create doubts, cast shadows to deceive the whole world since the beginning of time Revelation 12 vs. 9. Jesus however wants to meet us right where we are and nurture us back into a saving, fulfilling and satisfied life in Him, 2 Cor. 5, vs. 18.
In the story the woman at the well, John 4 vs. 7-42, talks about a woman who comes at the noon hour to draw water from a well. A time of day when the other village women have long gone back to their homes. The time is perfect for this woman because no one really would be at the well, she did not want to be noticed by the other villagers who knows already about her lifestyle. Jesus however was at this well, He began by asking a profound question, “Can you give me a drink ?” John 4 vs. 9.
Jesus already knows everything about this woman’s story and her lifestyle. He is not ashamed of her, nor is He embarrassed to speak with her, rather, He wants to restore her to Himself. Jesus hits the nail on the head when He ask this woman “go call your husband”. The woman then shares the impossible, “I have no husband”, she did not conjure any fantasy story she instead decides to be real with the King of this universe. Many of us cannot even come to terms with our chaotic lives much less share with a stranger the depth of chaos we are in. Jesus then answer, “you are correct in saying you have no husband in fact you have had five husband and the man you have now is not your husband”. John 4, vs. 18. How different the story would have been if this woman decided to be a story teller, instead she decides right there to be honest so Jesus could in turn point out the messy area of her life.
The point here however is not about this woman being real, which is also empowering. My point is that our Savior knows about the chaotic lifestyle we have, the mess we are in, the sins, the ugly parts and He is not ashamed of it. He wants instead something bigger for us, something better, He will meet us right where we are and perform a transformational work in our lives if only we would let Him into our lives and surrender everything to Him. He who knows all about the hurts and pains and confusions.
Why not invite Jesus into our lives and let Him do the impossible for us, what we cannot do for ourselves. The woman at the well was so amazed by Jesus’s encounter that she went to the other villagers and shared, “come see a man who told me everything I ever did”. vs 29. The Bible shares that the villagers came to see and meet Him and implored Him to remain a couple days with them. Jesus today wants the same thing for you and me, to transform our lives into a powerful, saving relationship with Him where He takes precedence over every area of our lives.
In the midst of chaos and mess Jesus transforms.
